Scope note
Curule-type chair that derives from the x-frame folding stools of ancient Egypt. It is characterized by a non-folding curule base supporting an embossed leather or cane sling back and seat. Believed to be of Spanish origin, they are named for the port city on the Yucatán Peninsula. Often found in Louisiana among plantation furniture of the 19th century.
